Despite having Auditory Processing Disorder, Alexander Schmidt from Hudson High School has gone on to sing & act, and plans to major in music composition in college. Even though his ears can deceive him, he has found a way to excel and surpass all expectations. Alex has learned to play two instruments and is currently working on vocals. To undertake a path that relies so heavily on an area of weakness underscores not just his passion for music, but his bravery and endless determination to not let his condition hold him back.
Losing a friend to opiates prompted Colin Sellers of Stow Munroe Falls High School to become a founding member of the Akron NOPE Task Force. He travels with the group to area middle and high schools and emcees the presentations, sharing with students the often tragic and emotionally wrenching results of drug abuse. Colin's other activities include Hitting for Home, Youth 2 Youth, and the Speech/Debate team. He maintains a 3.5 G.P.A. and was honored as an outstanding leader, receiving the community C.A.R.E. award. The teachers and administrators at SMFHS have said knowing a young man like Colin gives them hope for the future. He hopes to pursue a degree in Computer Science and Engineering.
Jade Houston of Akron-North High School is often described as an “old soul.” She maintains a 3.6 GPA and is active in her school's chapter of DECA, the Distributive Education Clubs of America, for those interested in marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, and hospitality. She is a member of Student Council, plays violin in the school orchestra, and is a School Ambassador. Jade works in the school store and also works as a cashier outside of school. She is excited to start her next adventure in life at the University of Akron College of Business and to pursue a degree in Finance and Banking. She says “I want to help people secure their futures”.
Aaryn Stockon of Dover High School is a very dedicated student, strong leader and participant in the community. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has received outstanding accomplishment awards in the majority of his studies. His love of animals led him to become an advocate for the Tuscarawas County Humane Society for 7 years. Aaryn started his own annual donation drive for the TCHS and on his 13th birthday, asked for donations instead of gifts. He enjoys helping neighbors with their dogs, caring for them and walking them when needed. He won the Prudential Spirit of Community award and was among the top 10% of student volunteers in the country. He also received the Top Volunteer award for Union Hospital. Aaryn is the 2 years President of "Interact," a community service based club. Aaryn will be attending KSU to major in Spanish and hopes to become an Interpreter.
Sarah Bihn from Buckeye High School keeps herself very busy in school. Aside from day to day classes, she has been involved in Yearbook Committee, S.A.D.D., Project Care, Blanket Buddies, Prom Committee, Freshmen Mentors, National Honors Society Safety Town, Choir, Photography Club, D.A.R.E., Stage Crew, and eight years of 4-H, the last year of which she served as President. Sarah is currently working at Buckeye Library, and at Subway. Everything she does is in loving memory of her father. She plans to continue her education at Kent State where she hopes to dual major in Business and Communications. Eventually, she plans to receive her Masters in Library Science.
Nate Lupi of Perry High School is a dedicated student, working musician, creative song-writer, skilled performer, charitable, talented guitarist & vocalist, successful entrepreneur, and positively driven every single day. He is a Louis Armstrong Jazz Award Winner and Representative for the Northeast Ohio Blues Association. He performs with bands and as a solo act racking up about 50 shows annually. Nate has recorded a CD with original compositions, recorded the National Anthem for the PHS soccer team, volunteers as stage hand for Canton Bluesfest, and assists fellow guitarists by posting playing techniques online. He's earned the respect of his older musical peers and remains very humble. Nate can't wait to continue pursue a music degree in college.
Compassion, dedication and volunteerism showcase Megan Hellenthal's traits. This dedicated student maintains a 4.2 GPA and is a tremendous leader to peers. She is a 4-year member of Green High School 's ensemble, choir, and musical theatre, a 2-year member of the dance team and now a varsity cheerleader. Megan volunteers with Safety City, The Chapel in Green, and Upstage Dance. Recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, Megan overcame all challenges and worked hard to make a full recovery. This life changing event has inspired her to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy to continue helping others achieve their goals.
Kofi Boakye is a 17 year-old Senior from Akron Early College High School. This award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, producer, and Akron native has toured the world with the Miller South Show Choir. He was accepted into The University of Akron School of Music’s Jazz Program at the age of 15, making him the youngest African-American pianist ever accepted into the program. Currently, Kofi holds a 4.8 GPA while balancing school and a blossoming music career. He plans to attend Berklee College of Music.
Melia DeJongh is literally a Kid Who Rocks, from Highland High School. She's been in several rock bands, orchestras, and choirs ever since 5th grade. Her band, Assault, came in fourth place in the 2017 Tri-C Rock Off. She teaches rock music to children through music programs. Melia maintains a 4.1 GPA while taking AP classes. Outside of school, she works a part time job and plays gigs with her bands. She leads in the classroom and the community and is always willing to help others.
