By Request

Written by
A hot minute ago, I talked about comfort foods on the air. In particular-- if you only could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? And for a lot of you, it was mac n cheese. So, I mentioned that my mac and cheese is always a hit. One of you hit me up on the Klaben Auto Stores text line and asked me to share the recipe. So, by request, here it is: Creamy Mac n Cheese Ingredients: 8 oz. elbow macaroni (I prefer the mac with the ridges so the sauce clings to the noodle better) 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 tsp. dijon mustard 1/8 tsp. salt 2 cups milk (I use unsweetned plain almond milk) 1/2 cup grated Parmesan 8 oz. cottage cheese 8 oz. shredded Mexican cheese blend (I use Tillamook's) 4-6 sliced cheese (I use pepper jack when it's just me and the hubs; Munster when I host family or take to gatherings) Instructions: Cook and drain macaroni according to package directions for al dente. Grease a 13x9 casserole. Heat oven to 375. Combine flour, mustard, and salt in a medium saucepan and stir in milk. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in Parmesan, cottage cheese, and shredded cheese. Add macaroni. Mix. Transfer to casserole dish, cover, and bake for 25 minutes. Top with sliced cheese and bake uncovered for 5 more minutes.

Cobble Cobble-er

Written by

I've discovered a delicious dish that is so easy to make! And, if you have leftover turkey from your upcoming Christmas meal (ham or any other meat will work, I'm sure!) this is a great way to us 'em up.

Chicken Cobbler

Ingredients:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

4 cups rotisserie chicken meat, shredded

1 (15 ounce) bag frozen mixed vegetables (such as corn, peas, carrots and beans)

1 (11.36 ounce) package Cheddar bay biscuit mix (such as Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix®) PLUS the 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar in the instructions on the package

2 cups milk

1 (10.5 ounce) can cream of chicken soup

1 cups chicken broth

2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Place butter in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish and place in the oven to melt. When butter is melted, add chicken in a single layer over the butter. Top evenly with frozen veggies. Stir together biscuit mix, seasoning packet from the mix, and milk in a bowl until well blended; pour over the chicken and veggies. Spread lightly and evenly over the top of the mixture but do not stir. Whisk together soup and stock in a second bowl until smooth. Pour over biscuit mix but do not stir.

Bake in the preheated oven uncovered until very golden brown and only very slightly jiggly in the center, about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your oven.

Sprinkle parsley over the top if desired and let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Punched

Written by

Cheers! Some company decided to do some research on each state's favorite holiday cocktail. Guess what Ohio's is? Christmas Punch-- which could happen if you have too much of this, but I digress. No fancy names in the Buckeye State or fancy drinks, either. But that's how we roll. So, if you're inclined to serve this up... This can be made without the boozkie-- unless your life's goal is to become a Big Goofy Nominee. LOL

Enjoy!

Christmas Punch

Ingredients:

1 orange, sliced
1 cup cranberries
½ cup pomegranate seeds
2 cups cranberry juice
2 cups orange juice
1 cup pomegranate juice
2 cups lemon-lime pop
1 cup white rum (optional)
ice
fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish

Instructions:

Add the slices from 1 orange, 1 cup cranberries, and ½ cup pomegranate seeds to a large pitcher or punch bowl. If using a gallon-sized bowl or dispenser, you can double the recipe.
Pour in 2 cups cranberry juice, 2 cups orange juice, 1 cup pomegranate juice, and 2 cups lemon-lime soda. You can also add 1 cup white rum or alcohol of choice if including.
Serve in glasses over ice and garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs.

Thank You is Not Enough

Written by

It's just a few days away. On Veteran's Day this year, the station undertakes the Operation Heroes live event. Though, our efforts to help the Valor Home of Summit County is a year-long labor of love for our veterans. On Saturday (11/11), we'll be broadcasting live as a team from the Lowe's on S. Arlington in Green from 9am-6pm. We hope to see you and thank you in person for donating to this organization that helps our veterans locally. Your money will stay right here to help them get back on their feet again as they re-familiarize themselves with integrating back into society again. No donation you make is too small. It all matters, so don't feel like you don't have enough to give. You do. It's our way of saying "thank you" collectively when those words don't seem like enough to truly express the gratitude we feel for the sacrifices that these men and women and their families make-- to serve our country; to provide freedom for those they don't know personally, but for an ideology we all believe in.

My love and concern for veterans is personal. My father is a Vietnam vet. He served in the Army-- the Big Red One-- though he entered the military not to fight, but to become a mechanic. But in times of war, everyone in the military took up weapons and fought, and my father was placed on the front lines. I can't even wrap my mind around how frightening it must have been for a 19-year-old to enter a life-or-death situation for a number of years. My father earned a purple heart and two bronze stars for his bravery and heroism-- saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. I will never forget the story of my dad being wounded. He was hurting. It was terribly hot. The sun was blazing down, and my dad was getting ready to go into shock. He knew if that happened, he would die. He prayed to God for some water to cool him down-- to keep him alive. At that moment, one dark cloud floated over my father. It rained on him-- and his life was spared.

I never tire hearing my dad's war stories. I've heard them a million times. And each time, I listen with fresh ears-- as if I'd never heard them before. I still marvel at his strength, because I don't know if I could have endured what he did at his age and survived. My dad struggled when he returned home from the war. There weren't parades and cheers for Vietnam vets. It was quite the opposite. My dad struggled with PTSD, but that wasn't a "thing" then. But the love of my mother and the grace of God got him through those times.

This is why supporting an organization like the Valor Home is so important. These warriors fought for us, and we need to fight for them. I hope you can join us in our way of saying "thank you". If you can't make it in person Saturday, you can donate online at wone.net through the end of November.

Thank YOU for all that you do. We're all in this thing together.

Stop it, Dad!

Written by

LeBron James may be a basketball star, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and Akron-native. But he's also just "dad". LeBron was acting all "encouraging-proud-dad" during daughter Zhuri's volleyball game, which was not appreciate by Zhuri. You know how kids get-- embarrassed by their parents. The videos are sweet as he encourages Zhuri to "do your thang, Munchkin."

Home Sweet... What is This?

Written by

If you're quirky, unique, eccentric... and you're in the market for a new home-- this might be the place for you. For the first time in 20 years, an iconic home in Lake County's Concord Township is for sale. Known as the "Flinstone Home" the home boasts 5 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 3 car garage, is 3,600 square-feet and sits on a 1-acre wooded lot. Because of its interesting architecture, the home was featured on MTV's "Cribs' back-in-the-day. The piece of "art" was commissioned in the 70s by a family in Mentor who was looking for a playful, organic space for their eight children. For a mere $400,00 it could be yours!

So Board

Written by

Time to go up in the attic or down to the basement. You might be sitting on a board game that could fetch a nice price tag. We're not talking about a Monopoly board game, or Sorry!, or even The Game of Life. There were some not-so-mainstream board games from the 80s and 90s that could mean some quick dough for you. Like Tornado Rex. This 3D game is from 1991. Do you remember it? Each player is trying to hike up a mountain before the Tasmanian Devil gets you. Versions that are used but still in good condition could net you over $200 on eBay.

Gettin' It Done

Written by

The garage is the place to be! So many businesses started there: Disney, Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Virgin, Amazon, Google... and maybe Inifinity Laser Engraving Company. In Concord, 18-year-old Jeremy Coller operates three high-powered CO2 laser machines. Gifts, promo items, and signs are a big chunk of his business-- which is now a full-time thing for him. His original career plan was to become a typewriter oil salesman. When he found out the high price of having something engraved that he needed for that career, he figured he could just do his own engraving! A few years ago, he joined the Willoughby Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce as its youngest member. And that opened so many doors for him

He hopes to expand his business one day to include plasma cutting and powder coating.

This dude is getting it done! And he's got a great philosophy: “You just got to keep trying. Just keep going at it all the time. Even if things are slow, things will pick up again. It's just one of those things just got to keep rolling with it and see what happens.”

Amen!

The Greatest

Written by

The greatest might be here in our own backyard. America's Greatest Detective, that is. The Akron Police Department employs 88 detectives, and one of their own is up for title. Dr. Troy looney is a 31-year veteran of the force. He is one of three finalists competing, if you wanna call it that, for the distinction.

Dr. Looney was nominated based on his career of impeccable service, but also for his work on the high-profile Stanley Ford murder case. Ford set fires in April of 2016 and May of 2017 that resulted in the deaths of nine people-- five of which were children. Ford was convicted in 2021 and received nine life sentences.

Dr. Looney currently works in financial crimes. He's also a profess at The University of Akron and is an author.

The winner will be announced between September 22 - 24th in Orlando. If he wins, Dr. Looney plans on using the $5,000 prize to establish a scholarship in the names of the five children that were Ford's victims.

Fingers crossed and prayers up that Dr. Looney wins this well-deserved honor!

Dog Whisperer

Written by

Cesar Millan ain't got nothin' on 74-year-old George Kocar of Bay Village. Every morning, rain or shine, he walks a 5-mile loop for his health and happiness-- and to greet every doggo on his route. He knows every dog's name; Every dog's story. And, yes, he gives them treats and lots of love!

George was employed by American Greetings and did some freelance illustrations for The Plain Dealer and big-time magazines. He uses his gift and love of animals to create drawings for the humans of his beloved dog friends. He's even been with families as their fur babies have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

I love sharing stories with you of the good people and good things that happen in our communities to remind us all that, yes, there is goodness still happening in this crazy world.

I Do Eclair!

Written by

With Labor Day almost here, many believe it's the last hurrah before things take a turn. So, let's make this final official backyard get-together a delicious one! I know I'll be making my favorite no-back dessert: Eclair Cake. You can't go wrong with this crowd pleaser.

Eclair Cake

Ingredients:

3 cups milk

1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix

1 (16 ounce) package graham cracker squares

1 (16 ounce) package prepared chocolate frosting

Instructions:

Stir milk, whipped topping, and pudding mix together in a medium bowl until well combined. Arrange a single layer of graham cracker squares in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan. Evenly spread half of the pudding mixture over the crackers; top with another layer of crackers and the remaining pudding mixture. Top with a final layer of graham crackers. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Spread frosting over the chilled cake up to the edges of the pan. Cover again and chill for at least 3 1/2 hours before serving.

Enjoy!

What's the Story?

Written by

I love behind the scenes info on anything. I love the stories, whether it's about the creation of a song, movie, book-- those things fascinate me. With that in mind, I thought I'd drop a little nug on you about The Dark Side of the Moon album cover.

There's nothing in the artwork that indicates the band: Pink Floyd, nor the title of the album. Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis are the duo that designed the beloved album cover. As you know, it depicts light being reflected by a glass prism into color. Six of the seven colors of the rainbow are featured, with only indigo missing. Keyboardist Richard Wright suggested the design team keep it clean and simple.

It's amazing how something so simple can be iconic.

Baby Cuddles

Written by

All babies need cuddles. Even if it's a 200-pound baby walrus. Staff membes at the Alaska SeaLife Center have been providing around-the-clock cuddles for this lost calf. Walruses depend on their mothers during the first two years of life, so the staff has been so attentive to the this "little" guy.

This poor creature has a littany of health issues. You can follow his progress on their Facebook page. Here's hoping he'll recover and be able to go out into the sea and do all the walrus stuff he's supposed to be doing.

Bear Don't Care

Written by

When it gets really hot out, we like to take a dip. Same thing applies to bears. When it's hot, why not cool down in someone's backyard oasis? Burbank Police encountered a leisurely bear just bear-ing it up.

The bear was not "arrested". He took a dip, then headed back over the wall and towards a tree. Probably needed a nap or a nibble. LOL
